RIVULUS® Field Standard

Taimen’s internal qualification standard for membrane fabrics used in breathable waders.

Rivulus® is not another “magic membrane”. Rivulus® is Taimen’s internal standard for selecting and qualifying the membrane laminates we use in our breathable waders. If a pair of waders carries the Rivulus® mark, it means the laminate was chosen deliberately, evaluated methodically, and approved through several stages – from workshop assessment to verification in real fishing conditions.

What the Rivulus® Field Standard is

We work exclusively with specialised mills producing high-grade waterproof–breathable laminates with consistent, repeatable performance. In practice this means we do not go below roughly 20,000 mm water column for waterproofness, and in many applications we use fabrics rated at 30,000 mm and above.

Catalogue figures, however, are only a starting point – numbers do not fully describe how a fabric behaves in real fishing use. That is why every laminate undergoes an additional assessment process under the Rivulus® Field Standard before it ever makes its way into Taimen waders. 

A fabric may look excellent on paper – high laboratory breathability and waterproofness – yet before it earns the Rivulus® designation it must prove itself in practical use, including:

• Long-term use – field testing by experienced anglers, across varied weather and different types of rivers.
• Mechanical resistance in high-wear zones – evaluating performance around knees, thighs and seat when exposed to gravel, rocks and repeated kneeling.
• Low-temperature behaviour – how the laminate performs in cold water and under repeated flexing at lower temperatures.
• Comfort on the move – how it feels “from the inside” during longer approaches and frequent changes of position.
• Repairability – whether the fabric can be effectively patched and re-taped while maintaining watertight integrity.

The Rivulus® mark therefore signals that a given fabric has passed this scope of real-world verification and has confirmed its performance in practice – not merely in a datasheet.

Once a laminate has completed full field verification, we classify Rivulus® fabrics into four usage profiles. This helps match breathable waders to the way you fish and the conditions in which they will be used.

Rivulus® fabric profiles

RIVULUS CORE – the balanced standard for breathable waders

High-performance waterproof–breathable fabrics designed as Taimen’s baseline, full-value standard. They combine comfort (softness, flexibility, freedom of movement) with durability suited to regular, serious fishing – without the sense of compromise in protection.

Best for: regular fishing in varied conditions – the core, all-round choice for anglers who want comfort, mobility and full functionality throughout the season.

RIVULUS PRO – heavier use, increased resilience

Fabrics with elevated mechanical resistance and more stable behaviour in exposed zones, intended for more frequent loading of the material while retaining good breathability and day-long comfort.

Best for: frequent trips and long days on the water, fishing in brushy banks and rough terrain with regular contact and abrasion – where waders are used distinctly harder than typical weekend wear.

RIVULUS SHIELD – durability first

Fabrics where the priority is maximum mechanical strength: denser, tougher structures with increased resistance to abrasion, ground contact and puncture-like damage.

Best for: demanding gravel and rocky rivers, frequent kneeling, difficult entries and exits – situations where a durability reserve matters most.

RIVULUS APEX – a marker for exceptional solutions

RIVULUS APEX is an additional tag reserved for fabrics and constructions we consider particularly distinctive within the Rivulus® framework. It does not describe a single attribute (such as breathability alone or toughness alone). Instead, it signals that a given model uses a material or construction solution which, in our judgement, goes beyond the typical performance of its category.

Regardless of level, every fabric marked Rivulus® Field Standard has passed the same rigorous selection and field verification. The differences lie chiefly in the balance between comfort, weight and mechanical resistance – not in fundamental quality.
