FFGene Elk Hair
FFGene Elk Hair is wapiti hair supplied as a patch, with greater length and thickness than typical roe deer hair. The stable fibres are used mainly for dry-fly wings, caddis-style downwings, and larger profiles or shaped heads built on the hook shank.
Construction and use
After cutting a bundle from the patch, remove the underfur and align the tips in a hair stacker. The hair can be secured as a wing or tail and, with controlled thread tension, flared and clipped into a head. Its longer structure helps build larger, clearly defined elements without excessive packing.
- Material: wapiti hair, longer and thicker than roe deer hair.
- Form: hair patch for selecting tying bundles.
- Wings: for dry flies and caddis-style downwings.
- Shaping: for tails, larger profiles and clipped heads.
