Hardy Averon Fly Reel
The Hardy Averon is a modern freshwater fly reel for outfits where efficient slack-line recovery and precise control of outgoing line are important. The standard Averon combines a large-arbour spool with a disc drag and an open-frame construction. It is suited to measured presentations as well as situations in which loose line must be collected promptly after a take so that the fish can be played from the reel.
The frame and spool are made from anodised aluminium. Every reel in this family uses an open half-cage frame, reducing the amount of material around the spool while leaving it readily accessible. This arrangement makes the spool quick to remove and refit. The reel is designed around complete interchangeable Averon spools, allowing several prepared line arrangements to be managed by changing the entire spool.
Construction and series character
The large arbor recovers more line with each turn of the handle, helping the angler remove slack when a fish changes direction or moves back towards the rod. It also stores the line in broader coils, which helps reduce line memory and tight coiling when the outfit is first put into use. Retrieve direction can be converted for left- or right-hand winding, allowing the reel to be set up to suit the angler's preferred arrangement.
Line pressure is controlled by an enclosed multi-pad disc drag with low start-up inertia. Once the selected setting is exceeded, the spool begins to release line without an abrupt initial rise in resistance. The drag knob uses a focused adjustment window, allowing meaningful changes in braking pressure without numerous turns of the control. After use in water carrying fine sand or silt, rinsing the reel with clean fresh water and allowing it to dry fully is sensible routine care.
