Hardy Z3 Ultralite LL Fly Rod
Hardy introduced the Ultralite LL for the 2020 season as a specialist fly-rod series for advanced light-line river techniques. Its development responded to the growth of European-style and competition-influenced methods. The rods were designed, developed and tested with input from recognised practitioners of modern light-line fishing.
Across the series, the remit extends from technical dry-fly presentation and long-leader fishing to dry-dropper work and contemporary Euro nymphing. Individual designs address different tasks within that field, while the family shares a clear focus on demanding river fishing where accurate presentation, line feel and close contact with the rig are central.
Construction and series character
Every model in the Ultralite LL family has a medium-fast action. The blanks use Sintrix NSX construction with a greater proportion of high- and high-intermediate-modulus carbon fibre. NSX combines Sintrix with an additional material that permits lower prepreg weights and targeted adjustment of the blank design while retaining the required strength. The intended result is a light, responsive blank with quick recovery and clear feedback as the rod loads during the casting stroke.
The lightweight blank design was developed to maximise line feel and sensitivity. Those qualities support delicate presentation, control of light rigs and recognition of subtle contact when fishing modern nymphing methods. The series action was shaped around technical river fishing for trout and grayling, covering both dry-fly presentation and specialised European nymphing approaches.
Ceramic-lined titanium recoil guides are fitted throughout the family. Their resilient construction allows the guide frame to return to position after being displaced, while the ceramic lining provides the contact surface for the fly line. An unground chestnut-brown blank completes the Ultralite LL’s restrained and distinctive finish.
