Hareline Lead Wire Spool

Lead Wire Spool is lead wire supplied on a spool for adding weight to artificial flies. It is a weighting material rather than a decorative tinsel or a ribbing wire. The spool format allows the tier to take only the length required for a particular hook and pattern.

Construction and use

Wrap the wire around the hook shank before forming the body when a fly needs to sink more quickly or hold its depth more effectively. The number and position of turns can be selected according to the required weight and the space available beneath the body materials. As a practical tying point, finish the wraps before the eye and bend of the hook and trim both ends carefully so they do not leave an uneven transition. Handle lead carefully, avoid creating dust, and wash hands after contact.
