HMH Spartan Vise C-Clamp Version
HMH Spartan Vise C-Clamp Version is a complete fly-tying vise designed to fasten directly to the edge of a bench with a C-clamp. This version suits a fixed tying station where a firm connection is useful when applying stronger thread tension and the central work surface should remain open for tools and materials. Its precision-machined layout provides generous access around the jaw tips, making it easier to use scissors and a bobbin or manage long wings and tails without crowding the hook. A brushed stainless-steel chassis and powder-coated clamp form a rigid, straightforward platform for regular bench use.
The hardened tool-steel jaws are operated by a large locking cam lever. Once the opening has been adjusted to suit the hook-wire diameter, the lever closes the jaws in a quick one-handed movement. When changing to substantially finer or heavier wire, reset the pressure rather than forcing the lever. The quick-change jaw system also allows the vise to be adapted later with compatible HMH jaws for a different tying range. The head angle is continuously adjustable, while the working assembly rotates through 360°. An adjustable disc-drag system controls rotational resistance—light for frequent inspection of every side of the fly, or firmer when the selected position should remain steady during tying.
Before tying, secure the clamp to a rigid, flat bench edge and set the column so that your hands and forearms remain relaxed. Seat the hook on the working area of the jaws and adjust the pressure until it resists normal tying tension without requiring excessive force on the lever. Set the head angle after fitting the actual hook: a near-horizontal position makes long bodies easier to monitor, while a conventional inclined position provides convenient access beneath and behind the hook. The included double-spring material clip keeps fibres, tinsel or hackle away from the immediate tying area.
