Loon Hook Hone
Loon Hook Hone is a compact hook file designed for restoring a sharp point while fishing. Hook points can become dulled by contact with stones, gravel, snags or hard items of tackle, even when the fly was sharp at the start of the session. A few controlled strokes help bring the point back into working condition before the fly is used again.
The hone measures 4 inches long and 0.5 inch wide and provides two abrasive grits. The coarser surface can be used for the initial correction of a noticeably dulled or lightly damaged point, while the finer surface is suited to smoothing and finishing. Work in one direction and use only light pressure, taking care to retain the original shape of the hook point rather than removing more metal than necessary.
Loon Hook Hone is useful for checking frequently fished flies and for touching up a hook after it has struck the bottom or pulled through a snag. Once sharpening is complete, inspect the point and wipe away any metal residue. Store the hone dry and separately from delicate leaders and fly-tying materials.
