Negnon Calypso Black Fly Reel
Negnon Calypso Black catches the eye with a bold, generously proportioned silhouette in which every detail has a purpose. The black frame draws a strong outline, the open spool geometry gives the construction visual lightness, and coloured accents within the spool bring the design to life. It looks like a precisely machined piece of equipment, yet never disappears against the rod: its proportions and contrasts give it an identity of its own.
We designed Calypso primarily for nymph fishing, including modern Euro-nymphing set-ups. Instead of making the reel smaller to follow the line size, however, we chose a large diameter. Both models are unusually generous for the lines they accommodate. The line is stored in broad coils, each turn of the spool retrieves a substantial length, and the reel sits in natural proportion to a long nymphing rod.
Construction and series character
The body, full frame and spool are machined from 6061 aluminium on four-axis CNC equipment. Machining allowed us to combine wide spool openings with an accurately formed, enclosed frame. The result is a clean, technical shape: despite its diameter, the reel does not appear cumbersome, and its metal components form a coherent structure intended for regular use on the water.
The Full Frame design is particularly valuable when fishing a fine nymphing line or a long leader. By surrounding the spool around its circumference, the frame helps keep the material inside the reel and reduces the chance of it finding the gap beside the spool rim. This becomes useful when slack is retrieved repeatedly, the length of the set-up is adjusted, or a nymph is worked close to the angler.
Calypso No. 1 measures 100 mm in diameter and accommodates a WF5F line with 75 m of 20 lb backing. It is a large reel for light and medium nymphing outfits. Calypso No. 2 has a diameter of 107 mm and holds a WF7F line with 100 m of 20 lb backing. It retains the series’ nymphing character, while its greater capacity and broad spool also make it a convincing choice for stillwater fishing, particularly with full fly lines, longer casts and situations where line needs to be recovered promptly.
The Ultra Large Arbor spool reduces tight line coils and speeds up retrieval, while a sealed disc drag with graphite friction discs provides measured resistance during a fight. Calypso therefore joins its striking, large-diameter form to features that earn their place: a full frame for fine-line control, a broad core for efficient line management and a drag ready to accept the load when a fish runs.
