Sage 8000 Series Stealth Fly Reel

The Sage 8000 PRO family was developed for demanding saltwater fishing where large fish place sustained pressure on the reel. Its defining feature is a broad and repeatable range of drag adjustment, intended to manage resistance both while stripping line in preparation for a cast and after a fish begins its run. The controls use clearly indexed positions, making it easier to record a setting and return to it without relying on several turns of an unmarked knob.

At the centre of the reel is Sage’s SCS cassette drag, the Sealed Carbon System built around enclosed carbon friction components. It is a single disc-drag mechanism operated through two controls. The primary knob turns through one revolution and carries numbered settings from 1 to 20. A secondary control, indexed from A to E, provides finer calibration of the available resistance. This arrangement allows the lower end to be set for controlled line stripping while retaining access to greater resistance during the fight.

Construction and series character

The spool uses a quick-change mechanism, simplifying a change of line set-up and providing straightforward access when the reel needs cleaning. Its broad, concave palming rim can be reached with the fingers, allowing the angler to supplement the mechanical drag deliberately during a fight. A groove in the frame provides a practical place to secure loose line between casts, keeping it under control without wrapping it repeatedly around the reel body or rod handle.

The two controls do not operate separate drag systems. The secondary control calibrates the working range more precisely, while the main knob remains available for immediate adjustments on the water. Numbered and lettered positions make settings repeatable, including after resistance has been reduced temporarily to pull line from the reel. Retrieve can be converted between left- and right-hand winding, so the operating side may be changed without selecting a separate reel configuration.
