Sage Classic R8 Fly Rod
Introduced for 2025, the Sage Classic R8 is a trout-specific freshwater fly-rod family centred on dry-fly presentation. It is a modern expression of Sage’s more measured style: a deeply flexing blank, smooth moderate action and finishes that recall the company’s early brown rods. Across the family, that concept extends from light presentation to broader all-round dry-fly work.
Classic R8 is tuned for a patient, consistent casting cadence. Its smooth, deep load carries feedback from fly line, leader and fly into the hand, helping the angler regulate line speed, loop shape and placement. Under a fish, the deeper bend helps protect light tippets while retaining a clear sense of the fish’s movement.
Construction and series character
The construction is based on Revolution 8 graphite. High carbon-fibre density and minimal resin content give the rods a light in-hand feel. A nano-sintered resin application and more resilient axial fibre allow Sage to pack more fibre into the blank and re-profile its taper. Circumferential hoop fibres help preserve the blank’s cylindrical form and inherent profile while it works under tension.
For Classic R8, this material is applied to a deep-loading moderate action. Quick recovery from flex supports smooth energy transfer, controllable line speed and accurate fly placement. The blank also retains reserve energy for extending a cast or turning over a long leader as conditions change.
The traditional finish comprises a Sage Brown blank, Chestnut thread wraps with Beige accents and Beige markings. The rods carry Super-Slick chrome snake guides, a chrome tip-top and an SiC stripper guide. The custom up-locking reel seat is machined and anodised from aerospace-grade aluminium in a Flint finish, with an extra-figured walnut insert. Super-Plus grade cork is used for the grip. Each rod is supplied in a black rod bag with a quick-tie cord lock and an aluminium tube bearing a Sage medallion. The rods are built entirely by hand on Bainbridge Island, Washington.
