Sage Trout Fly Reel
The Sage Trout belongs to the Modern Classics collection, combining styling inspired by the historic Sage 500 reels with a modern adjustable drag. It is a full-frame reel family intended primarily for freshwater trout fishing. Rounded forms, restrained porting and traditional proportions give it a classic character, while its construction and operating system suit a contemporary fly-fishing outfit.
The full-frame body is machined from aluminium. The hub, ergonomic spool handle and drag knob are also machined and anodised aluminium components. Minimal porting leaves a more enclosed structure and reinforces the reel’s traditional appearance. The spool is retained by a screw-tight lock with a knurled nut, providing a secure grip when releasing or refitting it.
Construction and series character
The full frame surrounds the spool around its circumference, creating a continuous guard at the spool edge. A broad large-arbor core retrieves a longer section of line with each turn. Its concave, ported profile combines room for line and backing with a structure designed for appropriate rigidity. This arrangement provides the practical line-pick-up benefit of a large arbor while retaining the relatively compact, traditional outline of the series.
Fish control is handled by Sage’s sealed Sealed Carbon System disc drag, built around carbon drag discs. The enclosure limits the entry of water, sand and fine grit to the working surfaces. The One Revolution drag knob covers the complete adjustment range within a single turn and uses numbered, positive detents. Forty adjustment positions allow small changes to be made and make it easier to return to a previously used setting. The retrieve can be converted from left- to right-hand operation.
