Uni Mohair
Uni Mohair is a mohair yarn on a spool for building full, hairy fly bodies. Its very long fibres create a distinctly fluffy surface and give the finished pattern a lively, natural-looking profile in the water. It is especially suited to leech and Woolly Bugger patterns, as well as larger nymphs and streamers. The yarn can form an entire body or be used selectively where extra volume and an uneven outline are needed. Varying the number of wraps and the way the fibres are arranged makes it easy to control the final silhouette.
Construction and use
The long fibres build bulk quickly, so this material is most useful when the body should remain open and fuzzy rather than smooth and tightly sealed. After each wrap, move the fibres away from the tying point before making the next turn; this keeps them from being trapped underneath the yarn. Trim the excess after finishing, or leave selected fibres in place to extend the pattern’s profile.
- Material: Mohair yarn with very long fibres.
- Suitable patterns: Leeches, Woolly Buggers, larger nymphs and streamers.
- Surface: A full, three-dimensional body with fibres that move around the outline.
- Handling: Build volume gradually and clear the fibres before every successive wrap.
