Wapsi Dumbbell Eyes Plain
Wapsi Dumbbell Eyes Plain are plain lead dumbbell eyes for crosswise tying on the hook shank. They place concentrated ballast at the fly head and can affect both sink rate and the fly’s attitude during the retrieve.
Construction and use
Place the eyes perpendicular to the shank and secure them with figure-eight thread wraps around the connector. Firm tying and careful thread finishing help prevent movement while the remaining materials are added. Lead dumbbell eyes generally increase the fly’s load and may help it ride hook-point up, although the final attitude depends on the proportions of the complete pattern. Match the eye size to the hook and head, checking that the eyes do not obstruct the hook eye or compress the surrounding materials.
- Finish Plain, undecorated surface on the lead eyes.
- Tying method Crosswise shank mounting with figure-eight thread wraps.
- Added weight Mass at the head changes the fly’s sink rate.
- Position in the water The construction may encourage a hook-point-up attitude.
- Size selection Match the eyes to the hook, head and remaining materials.
