Wapsi Elk Rump Hair
Wapsi Elk Rump is a patch of longer, larger-diameter wapiti rump hair for fuller wings, tails and bodies. Its fibre size suits larger proportions, including hopper-style fly bodies, where a substantial hair bundle is required.
Construction and use
Choose fibres with aligned tips and remove loose underfur from the butts. For a larger bundle, stack the tips, but check its length against the hook before tying it in. The hair can form a wing or tail, or its trimmed butts can be used as the basis for a shaped and clipped body. Tighten the thread progressively, as a thicker bundle benefits from a firm thread base.
- Material: longer, thicker hair from the wapiti rump.
- Form: a patch for selecting substantial, compact bundles.
- Patterns: hopper-style flies, larger wings and tails.
- Handling: clean the butts, stack the tips and trim after securing the hair.
