Wapsi Midge Flash
Wapsi Midge Flash is an extremely fine, twisted flash material made from loose reflective strands. Its small diameter adds shine without overloading the delicate proportions of tiny flies, while the material can also serve as a fine accent in larger streamers, including saltwater patterns. The twisted surface catches and breaks up light to enliven a simple profile. It is intended as a flash accent, not as a substitute for hair or for a fibre bundle used to create volume.
Construction and use
Separate individual strands or a very small bundle, align them and secure them on the hook shank. One or a few fibres are usually enough on small flies; too much material can overpower the pattern. Midge Flash can be tied into a tail, wing, back or lateral line. After securing it, trim the strands to the required length. When combining it with hair, distribute the flash between layers instead of concentrating it in one thick bundle.
- Small flies: adds restrained reflective detail to midge patterns.
- Streamers: forms fine accents in the tail, wing or along the side.
- Larger patterns: provides a subtle detail in saltwater-style flies as well.
- Tying: use small amounts and secure the strands firmly with thread.
