Wapsi Swiss Straw
Wapsi Swiss Straw is a flat synthetic strip with a raffia-like structure. It is used for wing cases, wings, shellbacks and other flat fly components. The strip can be cut to the width required by the hook, making it suitable for distinct, lightweight layers on nymphs, sowbug and scud patterns, as well as crayfish flies.
Construction and use
Cut a section of strip, match its width to the hook, and tie it in where the wing case or shellback will begin. Pull it over the body with even tension, taking care not to compress the material excessively. Swiss Straw can be used as a single layer, folded, split into narrower strips or secured with thread wraps to create segmentation. Finish the covering with several firm thread turns, then trim the excess. Nymph patterns commonly use it for wing cases, wings and body covers, while wider pieces can form the backs of scuds, sowbugs and crayfish. Its flat form is suited to controlled coverage rather than round chenille-style wraps.
- Form: flat, continuous synthetic strip.
- Profile: produces a flatter layer than a material built around a round core.
- Handling: can be cut, narrowed, folded and secured with thread.
- Uses: wing cases, wings, shellbacks and nymph bodies.
